Here's one I remember from schooldays.

The Donkey
BY G. K. CHESTERTON
When fishes flew and forests walked
And figs grew upon thorn,
Some moment when the moon was blood
Then surely I was born.

With monstrous head and sickening cry
And ears like errant wings,
The devil’s walking parody
On all four-footed things.

The tattered outlaw of the earth,
Of ancient crooked will;
Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb,
I keep my secret still.

Fools! For I also had my hour;
One far fierce hour and sweet:
There was a shout about my ears,
And palms before my feet.

An Englishman is being shown around a Scottish hospital. At the end of his visit, he is shown into a ward with a number of patients who show no obvious signs of injury. He goes to examine the first man he sees, and the man proclaims: Fair fa' yer honest, sonsie face, Great chieftain e' the puddin' race! Aboon them a' ye tak your place, painch tripe or thairm: Weel are...

I've never heard 'The Donkey' before Sandy, it's lovely.
I like a bit of Shelley and this is one of my earliest memories of 'proper poetry'.

Ozymandias.

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away".
Once I saw a little worm, wriggling on his belly,
I stood and watched it for a while,
then stamped on it with my wellie!
Lol Ratter....that's the kind of poetry I like :-)
I prefer ratter's poem too, can't be doing with arty farty poetry that doesn't make sense and only comes across as pretentious (IMO)

Here's my offering...

Algy met a bear
the bear met Algy
The bear was bulgy
The bulge was Algy.
The reading by Alan Drake is better, but this will do.

I like Ozymandias. A good message, imo.
I think 'Blue Remembered Hills', if that's what it's called, is my favourite. (Housman)
I came on this thread to say
How jolly that it's National Poetry Day
This poem of mine took less than a minute
Which explains why it's rubbish, innit.
There was a man from Nantucket
Who went to sea in a bucket
When the water got rough
And he'd had quite enough
He said only one thing - that was "I won't try that again"
Once again, I cant see the type of 'link' given by ABed. Am I alone in this?
she's posting youtube vids Svejk, can you not see them?
Shakespeare: Sonnet 29
----------------------------

When, in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state,
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,
And look upon myself, and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featur'd like him, like him with friends possess'd,
Desiring this man's art and that man's scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
Like to the lark at break of day arising
From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate;
For thy sweet love remember'd such wealth brings
That then I scorn to change my state with kings.
kvalidir - He!
Mean to say that I can bug the hell out of ummmm, anne and a few others with my scribbles today. Oh goody!
No, a lot of people post those 'links' on music threads and I cant see them so don't join in.
Ooooh sorry Ed, I've got used to Auntie being around, I thought you'd run off and deserted us:)
Have you got Flash installed Svejk?
