i'm thinking very seriously of moving to new york city and know that i'm more than likely to need a hob to do so.  can anyone tell me what sort of jobs are available?  also, if there are any british expats living in NYC, can you advise me about the whole process?

i take it you are legal to work in the USA? If not, good luck. If you are, then take a look at www.craigslist.org - and click on the New York link. You will find everything from jobs, flats, roomshares to mates & dates. And http://www.villagevoice.com.

You might contact the British Consulate in New York City and see what they think.

um, how do i know if i;m legal to work in the usa?

You should start here and check out the work visa links. And as metagirl says, good luck! They don't make it easy for you!

If you were not born in the USA, do not hold a green card/work visa then you cannot work in the USA. the fact that you asked the question...how do i know if i can work.....indicates that you probably cannot work in the USA.

The british embassy/consulate in the USA also is not the place to ask these questions. They do not provide a jobs search service.

You could try and google summer camps in the east coast of USA. they prefer young British people to work in these summer camps. The money is not great but the work is fun and the experience is good.
