Someone i know has been in an incident around 12 month ago and has been on bail since. Due to appear at crown court shortly and is being charged with a section 18 but is pleading not guilty. This person had punched someone once and kicked out, but cant recall the kick connecting. The incident was over within seconds but the victim received quite bad injuries although he was only struck once. There was around 10 witnesses all in favor of the victim, but none give reliable evidence. CCTV footage is inconclusive/unreliable as it doesn't show much. This person has agreed to plead guilty on a section 20 but not the 18, as the person didn't intend to cause the damage that was caused. This person has no previous convictions for any offences and was a provoked attack.
In your honest opinion what do you think he is looking at?

If he's convicted unde S18 then immediate custody.
New Judge is correct as usual, S18 is very serious and is always a prison sentence, with 10 witnesses all saying 'guilty' your friend is very foolish to plead not guilty. If he / she does decide to plead guilty to s20 there is a chance of staying out of jail, but going to trial and losing ( which with 10 witnesses against them is almost certain) means no hope of avoiding jail. You will be looking at 3 years! possibly longer.
