I have worked as a secretary almost all my working life (I am really good at my job and enjoy it) but recently have thought about taking my career further. I felt that management of some type would be a step-up. I don’t have a degree and cannot see me having one nevertheless I obtained interviews with two well known companies looking for new management intake. Both involved a day of in-house testing my managerial aptitude, attitude, numeracy and verbal reasoning. My results were bad; scoring between 14%-29% on each test. My friend who is a HR Director said that while I could improve numeracy and verbal reasoning I would find it almost impossible to improve on aptitude and attitude and therefore should carry on as a secretary. Is she right?

You do with your life what you want to do with it.

I'm sure the advice was given in good faith as if you find yourself in a job you find difficult and unrewarding then that's not a good thing; but you never really know until you try.

You could try taking management courses. I'm sure much of them probably relate to getting the right attitude and changing your outlook to be more suitable. I guess some of it depends on whether you wish to change who you are. But in any case a training course would help clarify things and allow you do decide whether to still go for it or try something else.
