we had coloured stars depending which house you were in. silver star=2. gold star=3.
We had a system called SRI in primary school. You moved up the colours as you improved so everyone in the class went at their own pace.

No idea what SRI stood for - Scottish Reading I-something maybe.

(This was in Scotland, by the way!)

we are in Scotland too!
I seem to remember little cards that were colour coded and you had to pass the tests on each card before you moved up?

(I could be inventing all of this though...)
I remember this, you read from a sheet of words to determine what level/coour book you started on. I remember going straight to the last three, bronze, silver gold. As for what it was called..
think it was called "Reading Laboratory" in Scotland
I remember start.green ..blue..then red then lilac...
Wait a mo, Reading Laboratory rings a bell (thanks Sam).

God knows what SRI was.
I learnt to read using the (I think) ATO system, a phonetic reading system in the 1970's.

Not sure I remember the colour coding, I was very young though!
Oh, alnic. I used this for years in middle schools. What was it called? It was three letters. ................?
These were the hard back reading books after the Tom and Ann things..
ITA Eccles I believe
Eccles - do you mean the Initial Teaching Alphabet? Himself was born in Germany (RAF dad) so spoke German when young and then came to the UK and learnt to read using the ITA, his spelling is atrocious.
think i started on the red cards 2sp (hated it)
Tilly - could it be SRI??

Maybe I'm not havering after all.
I loved it Sam, really appealed to my competitive nature (even when I was 8).
Remember the arithmetic cards being different colours
No it wasn't SRI or ITA.......................what the heck was it? Reading laboratory sounds really familiar.
I'll be awake all bloomin' night trying to remember this!
