My (almost) 15 yr old grandsons handwriting is appalling so much so that his Spanish teacher refused to mark his mock exam as she said she could not read it. He is quite clever and it would seem his hands cannot keep up with his head if that makes sense. Anyone got any suggestions as to what we could to to help him write more legibly.

has he ever been assessed for dyslexia?
I have this problem and in order to write clearly I have to slow down considerably or, better still type.

Is it possible he can be allowed to type his work?

If not the only thing to do is to copy write by the clock. I had to do this at age 10 in order to get a place at grammer school. I had to copy text from a book and make it legiable yet keep to an acceptable time. It worked and I can still write clearly when ai put my mind to it.
Practice makes perfect. Needs to get a natural instinctive style that is readable even when writing fast.

If this idea of thoughts running ahead has any validity, and not just an excuse, then maybe leaving out unnecessary words might help (except in an English exam of course). But again practice. Practice consciously holding the thought stream to a steady rate rather than concentrating all on this free flow of ideas leaving little for concentrating on putting the ideas down. Make mental priorities until the subconscious does it naturally.

My handwriting is hardly legible these days because almost every note is made on the computer not real pen & paper. I should also practice, but at my age it is hardly worthwhile for me any more.
Not sure if this will help, but if his thought process is getting ahead of him, he could try first writing down some bullet points of things he wants to cover in his essay or exam answer, and then he might not feel in such a hurry to write it all down before he forgets it.
My jyoungest son has the same problem,it was brought to our attention by his English teacher who said his story writing was very imaginative but hard to read. She suggested he wrote down what he wanted to say in bullet form then when he'd got down everything he wanted to say and 'calmed down' re write the whole thing in better hand-writing.
