can som please tell me how to work this maths question out

hi folks need this working out just feeling a little thick sorry... 45/9 = 12 - ?
so there it is ,,thanks for the help.

My understanding is that both sums on either side of the = should have the same answer. So work out 45/9 and then you can work out 12 - ? And get the two numbers the same.

45/9 = 12-x
5 = 12 - x
x = 12 - 5
x = 7

i.e. 45/9 = 12-7
