Massive Decrease In Car Theft Reported

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Motor insurance theft claims have halved in the past five years says the motor insurance industry.

The fall is nothing to do with a decline in the number of would-be car thieves, say motor insurance companies, but modern cars have far more sophisticated security systems. Typical types of modern security include GPS tracking devices, alarms deactivated by the key fob or a mobile phone of the driver as well as the now industry standard immobiliser and fitted alarm.

Older vehicles with less effective security systems are twice more likely to be stolen now than they were five years ago.

"Security systems in cars have become much more sophisticated in recent years," said a motor insurance expert.

"Compulsory fitting of immobilisers in new cars has been a major factor in the reduction of car theft and modern cars are hard to steal unless in possession of the keys."

"Many of our customers find that their car has been stolen after a break-in at their home, when the car keys have been taken."

The drop in car theft is good news for motor insurance customers as it means less claims and eventually a lowering of premiums generally.
