Home Insurance: Girls Guide To Insuring The Safety Of Their Clothes

16:37 Mon 24th May 2010 |

On average women spend around £90,000 on clothes during their lifetime, but when it comes to home insurance many of us undervalue our wardrobes. With a constant risk of fire or theft to our homes we need to make sure we are covered should the unthinkable occur. We all know it is impossible to replace certain items that are ruined or stolen but having sufficient home insurance provides the security that there will be a pay out to help deal with your loss.

Home is where the heart of your wardrobe is:

Many people dice with disaster by not having home insurance, with such an investment as clothes it would be a sin not to acknowledge this in your home insurance policy - leaving women exposed if a tragedy was to eradicate the contents of not only their house but also their wardrobe.

It’s a known fact that home is where the heart is. So why many UK women running the risk of something happening to their treasured collection is baffling. The wardrobe is where so many memories are kept, and much like the clothes – they can be the good, the bag and the outright ugly.

Even though some of our clothes are seen as fashion faux pas, we still don’t want anything to happen to them - in fact we don’t want anyone to see them, so by taking out accurate home insurance cover we can assure they stay where nobody can ever see them again...locked in a dark place!

Shoes, bags, clothes and jewellery can add up to a high amount of monetary value in home contents insurance, so home owners need to make sure their belongings get the right level of insurance cover. A little extra cost goes a long way to secure peace of mind. Yet, as contents/house insurance isn’t compulsory a lot of home owners in the UK are taking an unnecessary risk.

Home Alone:

With the average wardrobe adding up to around £7,000, insurance companies are concerned about the number of people who are underinsured, as this would be added to the cost of replacing your belongings if your home suffered severe flood or fire damage.

Women need to do what they do best and shop around for the best contents/home insurance deal. With such a competitive market, especially online – you will find a deal which suits you and your needs easily and all from the comfort of your home.

Recent surveys have revealed that a staggering number of Brits under-insure their home by more than £250 billion, leaving millions of people to replace their possessions in the tragic event of a disaster. Adding to this is the risk we all run of invalidating our policies, which can lead to you thinking your covered then in the aftermath of disaster you find you actually aren’t and have to sort out the trail of devastation.

The cost of replacing an average household's entire content following a major disaster is around £45,000. You may think the room with the most value is the one that holds your wardrobe but 27% of the value is actually the living room, and then followed by 17% value from the bedroom which houses your clothes, shoes and handbags.

During the current ‘credit crunch’ people are cutting back on non-compulsory costs, which even means not being able to buy the latest stylish shoes you wanted. However not calculating your contents amount properly could mean you suffer further costs in the long run – then you definitely won’t be able to afford those new shoes and matching handbag.
