probably because they've hiked their prices by 100% and then offer either a month free or even 12 weeks free, rip off merchants

no different to many "sale" offers nowadays, not really a con

if your insurance quote goes up by 100% but you have had yet another year of not making a claim then after negotiation they knock almost all the increase off then it has to have been an artificial increase to start with
Businesses will go to any lengths to entice customers.
It's not really a con- it's a competitive market so if the price doubles it's time to shop around, but yes they do rely on inertia from customers at renewal time
my insurance is due for a renewal and its gone up by £50 .. quite suprised tbh i thought it was going to b alot more!! despite ive had no accidents or claims..
All the car insurance rates have gone up this year - it really does pay to shop around.

whitebears tell em you ain;t paying it and you want your no claims notice, see what they do
We use a local insurance broker and find they are well worth the modest admin charge as they cut though the nonsense and get us the best terms going. It also keeps a team of local staff in work.

I use the local swintons and they know full well that I take no messing about, if they offer me free weeks I just tell them to reduce the soddin quote instead
Mine went up by £50...I didn't think that was too bad...especially as I changed cars.
Oh...and I filled out a quote form with the same company before they sent me the renewal and it came back a few hundred more.

I would shop around, I tend to these days because they are hiking rates for existing customers
more than 20 years without a claim of any sort and my renewal from my insurance company has increased £150

bye bye

why do they do it?
20+ years no claim why alienate me ?

surely it would make sense to get rid of the crap drivers, like old men boy racers, old women, women ......
Lodger.... women have better rates than men for insurance, I thought everyone knew that!
This is for house and contents insurance, not car. When I received my renewal notice it was for nearly £400 although I have not made a claim for at least three years. I rang my insurers and they said that was their best price. I went to Go Compare and found one which gave me everything the other one did plus a few extras for half the price. From now on I shall shop around, not take the first offer. In the past I have been apathetic about changing (couldn't be bothered) but I must have paid out much more than I needed to.
the-lodger. ''Cr4p drivers'', eh? I see you cover all age groups apart from presumably your own. Rather a scathing comment about other drivers. With less than a week's 'lodging' here on Answerbank, proceeding carefully to avoid eviction might be a good insurance.
Been with same insurance company few years locally and each year it goes up about £70 so I tell them I can get better rate on the Internet. That does it I am back to paying just a few pounds more.
Girly 30 nice one could not have put that better myself.
Wow lodger. 20+ years. So I presume you were a crap boy racer at one time. Interesting eh
''...either a month free or even 12 weeks free,...//

eg Direct Line - and Norwich Union ( or whatever they are called now )

You should know that nothing is free .
The price they quote for '' 12 months for the price of 10 '' - is the price they really want for covering you for the year .

It's just another marketing technique
