Hi,

My Mum is really struggling to get travel insurance that will cover her ill health. Her cheapest quote so far is over £300 and she has telephoned so many insurance companies who claim to cover ill-health people, it's untrue! So many of them just dismiss her completely!

Her conditions are:

High blood pressure
High cholesterol
Stroke history
TIA (small stroke history)
Epilepsy
Type 2 diabetes

I understand that she is a poorly woman and it doesn't look good, but she hasn't been admitted to hospital in over 4 years and isn't under any consultants for her conditions.

Can anyone help?

Thanks :)

You probably won`t get the conditions covered cheaply. You might be able to get travel insurance that excludes those conditions but if you want them covered you`ll have to pay a fair bit I`m afraid

lol Eddie I go on cruises and the mortality rate is usually one person a week.

My friend who I holiday with has 3 of those conditions, she found the best deal on offer was with morethan....
Two companies do well for older people with pre-existing medical conditions in Which? latest report - Karma Insurance.com and Multi-trip.com . Looks like they have to be accessed via their websites though.

Eddie, you don't have to use a funeral director at all. It's your choice.

LSamson, I suggest you try again, excluding existing conditions.
I have found the British Heart Foundation website quite useful as they list many different insurers and brokers that can cover existing conditions. In my mind, if you exclude existing medical condiions, as some answers on here suggest, then there is no point in getting the insurance in the first place.
rainbow2, you still need to be insured against theft, violent crime, accidents.
If a person is confident in managing their managable illnesses then exclusion is a realistic option.
These people specialise in insurance for pre-existing conditions .
Why not contact them and see if you can get it any cheaper

Given this persons pre existing conditions - why would you risk travelling abroad without being covered .

Repatriation is an extremely costly business
it depends what's most improtant at the end of the day - being covered, or not having to spend the money. The poster is saying that the mum's conditions are stable
The woman is not being seen by a consultant, has not been in hospital for more than 4 years. This suggests she is currently 'well'.
I presume the blood pressure, cholesterol, epilepsy and diabetes are very well controlled by medication and lifestyle.

The strokes is altogether another thing, but if it has been years since the last stroke, and her overall health has improved, there is no reason to believe another stroke is imminent.

It's a gamble, excluding existing conditions, but MAY in this lady's case, be an acceptable option.
She has a stroke history / TIA history .

They might be stable - however no one can say that she wont ( god forbid ) have another episode at any time .

Is it worth the risk ( unless you can afford medical bills etc abroad ) ?

Thanks for your replies. It isn't possible for my Mum not to have medical insurance, even if it has been a long time since she had a stroke or was in hospital. I find it hard to comprehend why insurance companies don't realise that she is well at the moment.

Anyway... didn't require a debate! Just some advice and pointers in the right direction and I have some now so thank you for those!

i suppose becaiuse you are asking them to take the risk, rather than take it yourselves. You say it isn't possible for her not to have insurance, so you are admitting it'sa risk you don't want to take (understandably) but you now have to persuade someone else to take on the risk that you don't want yourselves, Which is why they want to charge you so much i'm afraid - you understand that she is well, but still don't want to take it. They don't have the benefit of knowing your mum, so want to cover themselves as repatriation can be very expensive.
Good luck!
