If convicted of 'driving with undue care' and 'failing to stop' do you have to let your *current* insurance company know about the points on your licence, or do you only have to do this when renewing your car insurance?

Read your policy - it is usual that insurance companies want to be notified of all convictions.
The conviction itself suggests that you have been involved in some sort of accident/collision, and you will be obliged to report that with a certain period of time (generally 48 hours).

Convictions themselves (apart from a ban) need normally only be disclosed at renewal, although it won't affect your current policy if you report it mid-term.
