I have now contacted the insurance co. (direct line) following a burglary at my home. I'm now being asked to prove I owned the items I'm claiming for, fair enough, but what kind of proof do I need to provide? I don't have recipts for all of it. I have photos of most of the items, would these be any good? The items stolen were mostly electrical, Ipod, cameras & laptops

Also insurance want to replace items 'like for like' but my mum bought me a new laptop same day as the burglary, and my partner has bought me a new camera, so I'm really not interested in having replacement items of those two, can I refuse them and ask for cash?

Sorry if these seem like strange/silly questions but I've never been through this before.

well if she only just bought it, she will still have receipts...

was it for your birthday?
Photos should be fine if you don't have receipts. My insurance company accepted a picture of me wearing the jewellery that had been stolen.

Show them the receipts for the new camera and laptop....they 'should' give you the money.
they may doubt your mum would buy you an expensive laptop just 3 weeks before xmas for no reason you see...
I read it as the laptop having been bought as an immediate replacement for the stolen item.

yeah sorry for confusion - laptop and camera were bought to replace stolen items....well, the camera will be my bday pressie in 3 days!

Thanks ummmm, I suppose I can always sell the items if they won't give me the money but it's just added hassle.
They don't have to give you the cash, but you can ask. When they are replacing electrical items, they usually have a preferred supplier w have preferential rates with

thanks bednobs, I'd be really pleased if they could replace the other items but as the other things were all a bit older I'd be surprised.
