Get as big a card as you can afford.
Can you not just downlaod them onto CD as you go along....
Check what the biggest memory card is that your camera can take. no point in buying gigs that you can't use. I would go for a few smaller cards. they do sometimes fail and they are easily lost. Don't put all you eggs in one basket.
If your new camera takes SD cards, there's something to watch out for... The original SD cards have a capacity of up to 8gb. The newer SDHC (High Capacity) cards can hold up to 32gb. Fine, except that the internal hardware of the SDHC cards is totally different to the older type. What this means is that the older SD card readers will not read SDHC cards. And though the newer SDHC card readers should be able to read an older SD card, not all of them will. Check for card/reader compatability before you buy!
Also, the SDHC cards come in a number of 'Class' ratings. This is to do with the data transfer speed. A Class 2 card will transfer data at 2mb, Class 4 at 4mb, etc , up to Class 10 at 10mb. While the lower speeds are OK for single shot stuff, allowing the camera to dump its data to the card, the higher speed capabilities become necessary if you want the camera to take decent quality video. Beware of buying SDHC cards that don't have the Class rating marked on them.
Good luck!
Excellent advice from heathfield and jomifl,

Just to add to it, you've not said what MP the camera is, but to give you some idea of the amount of pictures you can put on each size card, assuming it is a 10MP camera you would be able to put about 4500 pictures on a 16GB card!

Look at the second chart for an idea about other card sizes and camera MPs

oo thanks guys!!! Loads o info to digest, it says it can take either SD or SDHC cards but it terms of 'class' Im a bit lost as it says nothing in the manual about that and (when looking on Amazon at these cards) it never stated a class either.... what to do about that? 4500 is an amazing amount thou isn't it!? prob my best bet, although I do like the idea of buying a couple of cards just incase... (thanks jomifl)
Just Google for 'sdhc classes' and read all about what it means and what they do.
