If you have a contract and you have a nokia, can the phones you upgrade to only be nokias too? and do they give you a choice of what phones you can upgrade to or can you choose any phone on contract as your upgrade?

My dad has a contract phone and is due to upgrade soon. I really want a new phone but don't want a contract as it would be a waste of money for me but all the phones i want are on contracts and are too pricey to buy sim-free. I was hoping that my dad could upgrade his contract with a phone that i want, and i can buy him a phone that he wants. We would then swap sim cards so i would have a pay as you go and he would have his contract. Would this work?

the contract is with the service provider not the phone manufacturer so any makers model should be available as long as it's available in the price plan u choose

You can do what you say but you either have to make sure that both phones are for the same network, or that both phones are unlocked so they can be used on any network

I had a Nokia, and upgraded to an iphone. Some phones will be free to upgrade to, but better the phone, the more the cost (still cheaper than buying one pay as you go).

_sophie_... even if the handset your Dad gets via upgrade is on another Network to yours and locked, you can easily reverse these restrictions for a few quid via your local market's mobile phone stall or via ebay etc...

Snags is generally correct in what he says, but it's worth being aware that some of the newer phones often have no way to unlock them for some time after they are released.

It does depend on the handset model, so if you do decide to go down the route I suggested previously, best to check first. From the OP's original post, the handset wanted is probably one of the top of the range all singing, all dancing models, where the restrictions will probably not be able to be reversed for a while, if at all as Chuck says...
