what format is the movie in currently?
As Mattk has effectively suggested, you need to tell us the file extension for the movie. If, for example, its .rar (as is often found on movie downloads) then it's a compressed file and you need to decompress it before you can view it. If so, you'll need something like this. (Don't worry, it's free!)

I havent' got a clue what kind of format its in... where do i find that out? tried two different types of registration booster thingys (including the one you suggested) and they both want payments to carry out its work....
right click the file and select properties. it will then tell you what it is e.g. avi.

ooo it says ai at the end of its title...... whats that mean....?! lol!

Thats AVI...
Well at least we know that it's not a compressed file. AVI (= Audio Video Interleave) is a standard video format, introduced by Microsoft (so most media players can normally handle it). If VLC can't handle the movie it suggests that the file you've downloaded is corrupt. (Try a fresh download). However itt might still be worth trying VLC's closest rival, GOM:

You could also try installing additional codecs, in the hope that the one used to encode your movie file is among them. See here:

(After installing the codec pack, try the media players which previously wouldn't recognise the file).
