4x and 8x refer to the speed at which you can write to a blank disk. The higher the number the quicker a disk will take to finish, however writing at top speed can lead to unreliability.

DVD+ and DVD- are the VHS and Betamax of today, the jury is still out as to which format will survive, so it is best to get a writer than can handle both formats.

Thanks Mattie

The dvd recorder is one attached to the tele, not one on the computer. So it only writes at the speed it comes from said tele, does this mean can use any speed disc or is there any way can tell how fast the recorder is capable of.There is no reference to it in the instruction book.Sorry to be such a thicky !!!
