The cars have electric motors - one contact is on the metal floor of the arena - the other is at the end of the pole that touches a mesh in the ceiling with a bendy coper strip - a current runs between the two contacts - watch the top of the pole next time and you can see it spark as the contact scrapes along the mesh.
