Last year was on a bus tour around Paris, and went round the chaotic roundabout at the arc de triomphe. The driver claimed that if he crashed his insurance policy would not cover him, as it excludes this one roundabout as it is so dangerous. Fair enough, but he also calimed every insurance policy, included mine, would also be invalid here. I am sceptical but he swore this is true... Is it?

The Place de l'Arc du Triomphe vaguely resembles a merry-go-round, except that it's not merry and seldom goes round. It has 12 entries and as many exits, locally called 'escape routes'.

Generally UK insurance gives automatic third party cover in France. Insurance companies can arrange more cover check before travelling.  I am also sceptical about your drivers information - I mean surely roundabouts in Rome or Cairo are just as bad??  I would check with your broker before trying it though!

We were told this by our English guide on a trip to France a couple of years ago - according to her, all insurance was void on the Arc de Triomphe roundabout.

It seems crazy, but our guide said the same thing.  Thanks for your answers. Dont think i'll bother embarrassing myself by calling my insurance company to check...

There used to be aguide in hampshire who told everyone that the only venison sausages made in all england were made at the butchers in lyndhurst!!

Sounds like a guides good story to me

It is definately not true. I have Comprehensive cover for the whole of Europe and the only exclusions are the normal ones you get in the UK.

I think you are right. Thanks. What are the normal exclusions in the uk?

I think you will find that it is the French insurance that excludes the Place de Etoile. If you bash or are bashed(as a French insured driver) you have to sort out your own compensation from the other driver. The French Insurance rules are different from British, but British Insurance works fine over there, without this crazy exclusion.

Just put a bit of pressure on the french guy to admit liability, they normally give-in fairly quickly....
