In general, changing timing belts is not especially hard job, but if you want to have a go you'll need a decent workshop manual. The Mazda is non-interference and should not be damaged if the belt breaks, but it's still going to be very inconvenient. If it hasn't been changed for some time, do it asap.

If the timing belt breaks it can, and frequently does, cause big trouble and a BIG bill (1000 on a friend's Astra).  The MX-5 belt should be changed at the next convenient opportunity after 54,000 miles.  If that's where you are, don't put it off.
