Try blowing through it, you should be able to blow one way only. The water should enter via the end you can blow through.

Obvious init.
Just thought, is non return valve for air flow. If so amend 'water' in second sentence to read 'air'.

oh yeah its seems obvious now. so the end i can blow through goes nearer to the pump.
I've never seen a one way/non-return valve that hasn't got an arrow on it to indicate the flow direction.
I would have said there should be an arrow on it somewhere.
Question Author
nope i've looked several times
To put it in simple terms the direction you can blow through should match the direction of flow.

If you can't manage that get somebody to do it for you.
