Groan. I hate you. : )

OK - seriously now, this place has it all, and is lush, but cheaper than the Burj. Some friends of mine stopped off at the Ritz-Carlton, and said it was just fab.

depends what you mean by 'central; there's not that much to do in downtown Dubai except the gold souks and maybe a boat ride across the creek. (It's a few years since I've been, so that may have changed, but I suspect not; developments have mostly been along the coast and in tourist areas.) You'd probably be just as well off getting a hotel on the beach and making the odd excursion into town.
I have just come back from a few days in the Al Mooraj Rotana who are doing great offers as there is a lot of roadworks and building outside the front. No problem if you get a room overlooking the pool at the back. It's a great hotel, a five star, and, although there are limitations owing to the works (its the same all over Dubai) they have shuttle buses which come and take you to the major malls and other places. The pool area is very nice as well. The malls are OK but, in the Mall of the Emirates, the biggest in the world, there is a Carrefour supermarket where I got some great gadgets and computer stuff for next to nothing. It was also the best place to buy stuff for lunch too. Same thing if you are going on the ferry (about 20p.) to gold souk. There is a Carrefour near the quay for getting decent food as I am not good at finding stuff I like abroad. French loaf and cheese always works. Taxis are amazingly cheap as well.
Dubai is one big building site. I'm off there tomorrow night so will let you know. Madinat Jumeirah gives you a choice of 45 restaurants in the resort on your doorstep. It gets top rating on Tripadvisor too.
