Does anyone know why the key F and J on laptops have a little raised bar on them?

When you are touch typing these are the keys where you place your index fingers. You can check they are in the right place without looking at the keyboard.
They are there so you know, without looking, that your fingers are on the 'home keys'

When touch typing your fingers should rest on

A S D F for the left hand
and
; L K J for the right,

F & J should be under your index fingers :-), the little ridges are just to let you know you're there!
sorry Spud :-)

Great, thanks guys!
...but it's not just on laptops, it's on all decent keyboards
For the same reason, there's a raised dot or bar on the number '5' on numeric keypads.
