What else smells like central heating oil?!

A strong smell has become noticible in my living room and it smells like central heating oil. The house is an old bungalow in the country and I am used to occasional smells coming from mice dying under the floorboards etc but this is a new smell! The room is a considerable distance from the oil tank so could the smell belong to something else?
