Hi everyone,
i just need help clarifying something, if anyone can help...

Person A earns 37% more a month than Person B. Their total outgoings total 1300 per month.

As Person A earns more than Person B, is it fair to say that Person B should pay 37% of the total outgoings for the month and Person A pay the rest, just so they are paying the "same" amount each month, or am i wrong in thinking that this is right?

Any help or other views appreciated!

if youre sharing it so that each pays proportionately then person A would pay 57.8% of the bill and person B would pay 42.2% of the bill.

But why should they pay more because they earn more?

hey redcrx, how are you, thanks for your answer, can i ask how you come to that percentage?

New judge, its not that they have to, its so that the person earning a bit less is not struggling each month.
By ''same'' I take it you mean ''proportionate''
Look at it this way...

If B earns 100% of his pay, A's pay will be 137% of B's amount

Their total is 237%

Divide the 1300 by 237 to get 5.4852 (this = a 1% figure)

A pays 137 x 5.4852 = 751.47
B pays 100 x 5.4852 = 548.52

Ok, it's 1p out, but that's decimal places for you, and they can fight it out between themselves
say person b is earning 1
person a is earning 137% x 1 = 1.37

total 2.37

100 divided by 2.37 = 42.2 % (to 1decimal place)

100-42.2 = 57.8%

ahh, i see, you are clever people on here arent you,

thank you very much redcrx & heathfield, much appreciated
If it's a couple, then every couple is different.

Some couples split everything 50-50 regardless of earnings, some put everything in one account and pay the bills and split the rest, some couples still have one person holding all the money, paying all the bills and giving 'pocket' money to the other (I could name names on that one!).

I wouldn't get hung up on exact amounts. My wife earns less than me, so although we put roughly half in each for shopping we each pay for our own petrol and clothes, and I pay a lot more of the mortgage than her to ensure she's not skint. Then for other things like electricity I tend to pay it, but if she's in town she will.
I can tell you from experience that if you go down the route of 'you owe a fiver more to make up your 55%' then you will end up arguing at least once a month.
