Take the disc out of the car and, providing there is still at least one full month left before expiry, post it to DVLA Swansea for a pro rata refund. That is unless the garage specifically mentioned keeping the tax, unlikely if the car is old.
If they priced the car with the disc showing it's theirs, whether you want to take it out and hope they don't notice is up to you
Very clever, I didn't even think about doing this when I part exchanged my car last year. Doh!
I don't think you lost out Doolallygirl, in my experiece they are too fly not to notice
When I part-exed both of my cars, the tax disc issue was never mentioned. The discs were mine, so I took them and I jolly well claimed my refunds. As kshuker said, unless they specifically mentioned it, I doubt they'll care.
Remember you can only claim for the full remaining months and when you purchased the disc there was a 10% admin fee which will not be refunded.
I usually use it as a bargaining chip. Once I feel I've driven the best deal I can, I then say OK I'll go with that then if I also keep the tax disk.
