im dying to get a tattoo on my lower back ive never had one done yet. ive asked many people to describe the pain. some say burning, other say like an itch needing a scratch,others say like stikin a sewing needle in deep many times. as i dont like pain i would like to know many others experiences and i have also heard there is now a gel or cream invented to numb the area, you just put it on the night before.im from ireland so i dont know if other countries are far more advanced in the tattoing profession

Tattoos can be sore depending on which part of the body is getting tattooed..ribs, underarm, chest the back isn't 2 bad.If ure getting a small piece done it won't take 2 long.don't bother with the creams just grit ure teeth, well worth it in the end.Make sure u go 2 reputable tattooist ask to see their work good luck!

I would say that if you put the point of a sewing needle on your skin and drag it that is what it feels like. It does hurt, but it isn't unbearable and the pain wouldn't put me off getting another one. What would put me off getting another one is thefactthat they are permanent. I hate mine and I'm stuck with it, so please please be absolutely certain that you want it done :) And good luck :)

When I had mine done, I mentioned that a colleague of mine had said he fainted. The tattooist said, 'D'ya know, it's only blokes who faint. Never girls. They get themselves so hyped up about being hard about it, that as soon as the needle touches the skin, their entire body floods with adrenaline and bom! down they go.'

Personally, I had mine on my shoulder. It was mildly irritating, and had it not been a tattoo I was getting, I would certainly have sought to stop it, but it wasn't that bad.

However, if you're getting it on your lower back where it's likely to be across the bone, this will hurt. The less fat there is in the area, the more pain.

And as Natalie says, make sure you really want it. I wanted mine (the same design, of my own) for ten years before I actually got it done and don't regret it at all.

I think it really depends on where it is on your body. Where the skin is thicker i'm sure it would hurt less. I had one on my left shoulder and the only thing i can liken it to is what it is really. That is that it feels like lots of injections.

I can't understand why anyone would want a tattoo. Like piercings they're repulsive.

To describe the pain/sensation I'd agree totally with natalie_1982 - it's exactly as you'd expect: like scratching a needle across your skin and breaking the surface the whole time. If it was any more painful you'd flinch but it's just about as much as I could endure without pulling away.

three years ago I got a tatoo on my upper back. It was painful, but my experience is this: usually when you are in pain you are also experiencing fear or anxiety because the pain means that there's something wrong. But, in the case of a tatoo, the pain is exactly what you are supposed to feel, there is nothing wrong, and so there is no fear or anxiety. This makes the pain much more acceptable and bearable. If you are certain that you want a tatoo- I would not let the pain deter you. The thrill and enjoyment of the new tatoo is well worth it. Also, some tatoo artists are much faster than others. My boyfriend got a tatoo matching mine, but his artist took about twice as long- thus prolonging the discomfort... See if you can research tatoo artists before you get it done.

Most tattoo parlours will NOT tattoo you if you are intoxicated in any way! I've had two done on my back and I laughed my way through the first one, the second one just felt like one big scratch. But the thing is it doesn't hurt at all afterwards! Weird. My blokey has just had his second one done on his arm and it was a total muck up. The red came out pink, the cream he used on it brought him out in a rash and there were black lines missing from where they should have been. A tattoo is generally for life unless you plan to pay ten times the original amount to have it removed by laser surgery. �70 an hour for that. Is it worth it?

My boyfriend got a tattoo 5 years ago, he hates it now and wants it removed. He described the pain as being 'sharp and scratching on the skin', I can't comment as I personally don't like them. But I do know they fade and look ridiculous. My boyfriend's has faded quite badle especially after going on holiday and it is only 5 years old!

No coz he doesn't actually like it anymore. It is a black panther at the top of his arm and he says he really regrets getting it done and has even made his first appointment for laser surgery!!

You should think it through carefully, do you think you will still like it when you are 60 years old? When your skin has started to wrinkle? It may be trendy now, but it is something you grow out of.

secretspirit I think the traditional anaesthetic is alcohol, normally 10 to 15 pints, on an all day session, generally in Blackpool. I'm with Smudge and Toffee on this one but it takes all sorts. Tattoos are bad enough but piercings? A mate of mine had a Prince Albert. He says it makes sex the best thing since sex. All I know is I never stand within 6 ft of him when he is having a ****.
