You will need to look at the terms of your contract of employment. Many employers, for instance, include terms that an employee will repay the cost of a course in full/in part if they leave within a certain period. If you cancel your attendance at the course within plenty of time, perhaps there will be no costs, or only minimal costs, incurred?
you could be...check the terms and conditions of anything relating to your employment or the course. Did your employers require you to go or did you ask to go? Will it benefit you or your employers most? is there another member of staff they could send instead of you?

thanks so much for these answers - thank goodness I asked and didn't just leave it. If I cancel 10 days before we will be fine. Cheers!
I suppose it depends on the reason you may wish to cancel the course. Have a word with your boss as he/she may be sympathetic with your reason & cover the cost. Good luck. P.S. Are you having second thoughts about the course due to nerves, if so it may turn out better than you anticipated.
I think we need the wisdom of maude on this one.
