I am from the uk and I am returning back to the UK after 4 years living in another EEC Country. I want to find a flat to rent and wish to apply for housing benefit (as my income will be low until I find a job again. I have never had housing benefit before and I don,t know how to apply. Does anybody know the procedure? Also where can I find the Housing Benefit DepARTMENT? Is it in the DHSS building?

Also can I find a flat myself first, then apply for HB or will the HB office have to find me accommodation? I forgot to add I will be looking for accommodation for 2 people as I am married. I would be really grateful for any help.

you need to go to the citizens advice bureau. they will put you on the right track and will tell you what you are entitled to.
hope this helps
Housing Benefit is paid by the local council or local authority. You can claim it if you receive welfare benefits or are on a low income.

If you've just returned from abroad any welfare benefits may depend on your recent record of National Insurance contributions. Eligibility will also depend on any savings you have and on your partner's income.

You have to find somewhere to stay before you apply for HB.

For general information see the DWP Housing Benefit page.
