Alcohol is classified as a drug because when put into the body, it can change the way the mind and body work. It is further classified as a depressant because:
- it decreases the body's activities and acts as a tranquilizer. (also makes you lose your inhibitions)
- it has been used for centuries as an anesthetic or to relieve pain
- its misuse can cause death or coma.
