does everyone who appears on tv/cinema/broadcast have to be equity member? -what about members of public endosring a product on tv advert?, what are the exemptions?

No.....my son and I work as extras ( Eastenders, Holby, the usual crap) Because my son is six, he has to have a licence. I dont and just signed with an agency. By having a equity card means that you are more or less a professional and can work anytime. Members of the public have to sign a consent form if they are face forward in shot. Childrens faces cannot be shown ( unless they are actors as mentioned earlier) members of the public endosring products are mostly actors simply due to the amount of time filming ( Close up, long shots, side shots)
Since the last Conservative Government decimated the power of trade unions I believe it is now illegal to operate a 'Closed Shop' within the UK. However, I believe an unofficial, unwritten, code of practice may take place between Thespian sorts kind of like a secret society. One may get work as an extra but will find it difficult to climb the ranks or secure a speaking part without an Equity Card.
