Toyota Rav4 car remote key/alarm misbehaving

Can anyone tell me why my Rav4 car alarm refuses to be deactivated by the remote key?
Went shopping last week and locked the car with the key, later used the key to open the boot and relocked it remotely. When I returned to the car tried to open it with the remote and it refused to unlock, so I used the key obviously the alarm went beserk!
Now the remote wont work at all and the alarm goes off every time I try to open it or get out! Have changed the key battery so it's not that.
Please help my blushes are making me look guilty of nicking my own car!
