Your LAN is faster than your Broadband line but this shouldn't matter as the link to whatever you are accessing will run as fast as the slowest part of the network.

You would need to provide us with more info to help diagnose your problem.

firstly ty for answer .
on my first post it says nt broadband , that should say bt.sorry
the bt usb conn is the oldest and as my default settings , the new ntl ethernet (lan)shows up in settings as active it also shows upon my desktop as connected , if i just goto google or any explorer thingy it looks for it says page found ,then after an age itgivesme the error page,
if i then use the bt dial up ,i getonline ok. at this point it appears both are working because if i disconnect from bt while streaming say a video itstill plays ,
then if i justgo back or clickonanother thing it shows the error page
if that makes any sense?
thanks for anything to help me from ringing there helpline
Still a bit confused.

Is your NTL Ethernet LAN effectively an NTL cable broadband connection?
The BT USB connection, is that Broadband or just old fashioned dial up.

One guess at why the test you did worked is to do with DNS servers. Maybe you haven't got the NTL DNS servers configured which is why once the destination IP address was resolved by the BT DNS servers your NTL worked but after BT was disconnected a new attempt failed as it had no DNS servers to access.

Did NTL provide a setup program to configure their connection or provide you with the correct settings?

thanks again ..
the bt usb is broadband , as is the ntl ethernet connection
ntl left a start up disk but i was not the one who installed it , i was at work and my bro did it .. he knows what hes doing , so i think the set up was ok .
is it worth me erasing ntl and starting again with the disk .. but as i say my bro should know and it all saysi ts working
more info ondns wouldbe helpfull..
thanks
To rule out a DNS problem try putting this URL in IE:

http://198.133.219.25

If this works but putting http://www.cisco.com doesn't then you are having a problem accessing the NTL DNS servers.

If this doesn't work then something else is wrong, in the Command Prompt try typing:

tracert 198.133.219.25

This is traceroute and see what result you get.

Try it with BT Broadband up so you see the sort of results you get.
