An earlier question has prompted me to wonder..

Why is it the EU have acheived what hitler and others have failed to acheive? Why is it that when there's a military invasion we repel it with vigour but when it's done by stealth and red tape and other peaceful methods we lay back and let ourselves get shafted, is this a uniquely British trait?

Ah propaganda ploy number 2

Assume the propersition you wish to establish is true beyond question and then ask a follow up question based on that assumption.

Well done Loosehead! you're well on the way to being a tabloid editor!
Well done jake-the-peg you're well on your way to being an English politician willing to sell this country of ours down the line at any cost.
Note I said English politician, because the politicians of the other three countries that make up the UK will fight tooth and nail to protect the interests of their peoples.
Clearly Loosehead we have the likes of JTP in government.
JTP do you honestly think there is no element of truth in what looshead has written ?
Perhaps a visit to specsavers is in order !
It's called change guys - it happens

Build a bridge and get over it.

The EU isn't perfect but neither is ours or any government and it sure won't get any better with people sitting on the sidelines whining about metrification and commas in petrol pump prices.

There are big issues like expansion, tax harmonisation CAP reform etc. but sitting on the sidelines desperately trying to turn back the clock to some imagined idyllic age will never sort these things out.

The coming century will favour the likes of America and China - big countries with big clout. We already can't sneeze without George Bush's say so - we're in a war in Iraq 'cause Tony needed to keep him sweet.

Individually European counties are of diminishing importance - economically, militarily and politically.

Together we are the largest economy on the planet - I don't think the US wants the competition and is very happy to see people desperately willing the EU to fail at any turn.
I think it probably is, yes.

The government seems much more remote and disconnected from the general population in this country, compared to others, and people just let them get on with their games and their strange, isolated lives.

I mean, how many people think TB & co really know what real life is like any more? 'Government' could be a different country.
Having read some of the thinks that are happening in the UK now (National Identity Database, police checking motorists fingerprints, CCTV cameras everywhere, secret imprisonment without access to family or a lawyer), I would have thought it was the present government that was coming close to achieving what Hitler set out to do. At least you have access to the European Court of Human Rights to help defend yourselves as individuals against their worst excesses.

EuroEnglish

The European Commission have just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5 year phase-in plan that would be known as "EuroEnglish": --

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favor of the "k". This should klear up konfusion and keyboards kan have one less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with the "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent "e"'s in the language is disgracful, and they should go away.
By the 4th yar, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".

During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaiining "ou" and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters.
After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubls or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech ozer.

The greatest threat is the invasion of our privacy under the pretext of stopping terrorists. The problem is that many people do not realize what is going on. We could all be undesirables in the future if we get a tyrannical government. Go to, "no2id.com", "Liberty," and "Privacy International." If you want to of course.
