Can an elecrical fault make a hi-fi turn itself on?

Or do i have a ghost?! Sorry if this appears twice cos i posted it before and it hasn't showed up... its also posted on home and garden!!

depending on the hifi, yes.
If the hifi turns itself on (from standby say) when the power is turned off and on again at the wall socket, then a power dip (not necessarily a power cut) could cause it to turn on.
You also have to rule out - Kids/Cats/Dogs messing about with remotes and also other remotes interfering with the stereos and also timers inadvertantly switching it on - some stereos have this function.

I have ruled out everything like that!! It is switched on at the mains all the time because it has a clock, but to actually switch it on you have to either press the button on the front or on the remote. The remote was in the wrong position to work even if it had accidently been pressed (even though that is impossible as it was out of reach and nothing near it that could have fallen on it).
