As a relatively new pipe smoker I'm wondering how to clean the stem efficently. Can anyone help?

try a pipe cleaner!
As a Pipe Smoker since I was five years old, I would suggest that you get in the habit of dribbling when you are smoking it! This way, there is a constant supply of natural cleaning fluid.

I meant how do I get rid of the carbon build up and the bitter taste which accumalates after a while
I've smoked a pipe for about 35 years: I don't see how you can get a carbon build up in the stem - the bowl yes and I use a variety of tools to scrape it out (including an old penknife!!)

Otherwise just keep the stem cleared regularly with pipecleaners. That seems to work.

Also alternating between more than one pipe allows the other to "rest"!
