I'm guessing it was the type of squeeker like the ones placed in Teddy bears.
One that is squeezed by hand, rather than a noise from the mouth.

my mum had a set of sooty puppets, inc a sweep one which had a squeaker in the nose part so when you mored his mout he squeaked!

The guy who did sweep, had a punch and judy type device in his mouth. it can be obtained from joke shops!
