anyone know what the solution used to clean cds is?

Not fully sure, but probably isopropyl alcohol. I would test a bit on an old CD if you get some and want to use it for this purpose.

Soapy water ... dry with a soft cloth

Just place the cd under a warm tap to losen any hard debris and gently rub gently with kitchen towel and a bit of fairy liquid.
