It takes a few years to learn to fly an airliner, and it is more about managing the whole aircraft, i.e. systems, navigation, fuel, air traffic control etc.

Like anything you are trained to do, its not hard until things start going wrong, then it becomes more challanging.

In turbulence, the aircraft stays on course ok, but it is harder to keep your level during severe trubulence, so the aircraft may climb or descend by a few hundred feet either side of its cleared level when turbulence is severe. This, fortunately, is very rare.

Cheers

Airline pilots rarely have their hands on the controls between the taking off and landing parts of a flight. The automatic flying control system takes care of most of flight.
Well it can't too difficult can it? On 911 terrorist's (supposedy) managed to fly civil aircraft around the USA and into buildings with only basic training on Microsofts flight simulator game and a few hours in single engine cesna aircraft.
apparently not.
