how far does demolition smoke from a demolished tower block /large building travel? - and doesn't all this huge amount of soot /smoke/debris badly affect neighbouring properties/cars, requiring owners to extensively clean them afterwards?

It's not smoke, but concrete and cement dust, and it will normally be confined to about a half mile from the site. But it will damage your car's paintwork if it's just left. Too bad if you are away on holiday and your car gets covered with it.
It will depend upon the prevailing winds and the level of moisture in the atmosphere as to how far it will travel.
