Lead will shield Superman's vision but will it form a barrier to a magnetic field? The servers in my office react adversely to the magnetic field generated by the lifts on the other side of a brick wall. Although it may not be feasable to overcome this issue I would still be interested in learning how this could be done.

Normally the only magnets present in a lift shaft are near each floor (to sense the levelling speed and stop postion, and only about an inch square) - does the problem only occur when the car passes your floor or is it always there?

I've used laptops inside/outside lift cars (you can probably guess I've had some involvement in the lift industry!) and haven't seen any problems myself - it's conceivable it could be the electric field from the car's controls. If this is the case then a shielding plate of earthed metal would certainly help!

I'll have a look at some information I have on lift installation guidelines!
