I bought a freeview box just before christmas(35 box from Argos). The handset has a subtitle button. When pressed not only does the subtitles appear on the screen(as long as the programme has subtitles) but if you are taping the programme they record the subtitles also.
Sky also does this

Newspapers have to negotiate with the copyright holders in order to put a freebie dvd on their covers.

This will cost them (the newspapers, that is).

So it's a case that 'features' and extras may be explicitly prohibited under the license agreement, or that it's cheaper for the newspaper (for licensing reasons) to exclude them, and just include the basic film.

Unless it had to be specifically written, there wouldn't be a cost issue in terms of physically putting that data on the disc itself - there is no difference in the unit cost of producing a disc with or without subtitle / extra / bonus data - but it could be significant with respect to licensed use.

My mother in law (deceased) was deaf and I eventually managed to track down a video player that would record subtitles on terrestial tv (it wasn't easy). It is a JVC model and I needed to order an extra part for it.

Will try and find the model number and post back
