Sometimes it gets hot, most times it doesn’t. Quite old, around 12 years I suppose, the make is White Knight. Do we need to buy a new one, or can be mended?? I have cleaned out the fluff at the front on a regular basis, and OH cleared out all the debris from the hole outside. Thanks all.

It's possibly a problem with the thermostat (or the thermal overheat control). A new part should only cost around twenty quid (if they're still available to buy) and a competent repair man shouldn't need more than an hour to fit it.
Currys own brand I think.
A bad connection on the heating element or a dodgy thermostat or both.
It's not Curry's own brand, you can buy direct from the UK manufacturer, Amazon and other retailers.
If you are handy you could have a go at replacing the thermostat yourself, there are plenty of videos online like this one

Buy a new one there is no need to suffer - the new ones are more energy efficient and you will save £ss - so important these days. And they are so much quicker. Go on buy one.
