Wirng colour code

I understand that in the late 60's the UK converted from the old wirng colours of red black and green to the current euro ones, that is except for house wiring cable which is still in the old colours. Anybody know why? I've also noticed when I've cut the plug off something brought over from france or germany the colours were actually brown and black and not the brown and blue we use here. I thought it was all supposed to be standardised.

wonder why it's taken near on 40 years to catch up

I seem to remember that it was a matter of priorities. Amateurs are likely to wire a plug, but hopefully house wiring is likely to be handled by people who know what they are doing. All the same, it does seem a long time.
