Cos u leave them in the torch/radio/whatever too long without turnin the thing on, I guess

These were new batteries though, just lying in a drawer. They hadn't been used in anything.

There is an alkali solution in the battery and even though it probably has an aluminium case it will corrode, eventually at a seam.
