White Gold Or Silver?

I've got a ring that was given to me 10 years ago. I'm sure I was told it was white gold but is there a way to tell (without taking it somewhere)?

On the inside it has 3 digits very finely printed which look like 575, though it might not say that. Does that represent anything?

It doesn't really matter all that much, I'm not planning to sell it or anything, just wondering really.

575 = gold.
57.5% pure gold
or alternatively 13.8 carat
375 is 9 carat gold, white or silver
Just a thought but white metal makes me think of 975 silver.......
875 would be 21-carat gold, more likely for a lady's ring. 375 for 9-carat gold is more often used for a man's ring.
Nice to know we males are considered worth as much as the females then... oh wait a minute...

Thanks everyone. Oh yeah I suppose it could be 375. Does that mean gold?

While I'm here, what's the best way of cleaning it? It's got 3 little stones in it too.
You could check with a friendly jeweller, but my wife was told to clean her engagement ring by leaving it in an eggcupful of baby shampoo for a while, then gently rubbing it with a soft toothbrush, and rinsing. Definitely don't use any kind of metal polish.
Drop them in some gin.

a bit of interesting info here.
I've just took my white gold ring off to see what it's printed with. I can't make it out...it actually looks like it says 'smeg' lol...
It is probably a marker for where to put the gems the other side.
375 would be more likely that means 9 carat Gold. i don't think 575 is a recognised 'number' for precious metal.
Emeritus said 575 is 13.8 carat...I assume the same as 14ct which is common in the States. I've never seen it here though.
14 carat is a USA only grade of Gold nor sold here or Europe, 375 is far more likely.
Maybe its possible EvianBabys ring was purchased in the States.

Sorry just realised I hadn't come back to this.

Ring was bought in the UK. So I can we can safely assume its gold, whatever the carat.

Friend left half a bottle of gin at mine last week and I was wondering what I was going to do with it (I think it's gross). Now I know :)
