It looks as if its going to be next to impossible to use my Toshiba HDD with the Galaxy Tab II, as this needs to get its power from the USB slot, and it won't be able to do this with the Tab, at the same time as downloading.

Its not that important, just irritating. It does shows the basic fault with tablets....almost complete lack of ports. If they only had a USB port or two, it wouldn't be a problem but hardly any of them seem to.

The Galaxy is still a useful little beastie though, and I don't regret buying one.

It might be possible if you used a Y connector USB lead and powered the drive from another device (or powered USb hub)

It would be a faff even if it worked though (and it's one of those yoou'd have to try it to see if it worked ones)

Just get a USB flash drive and use that as a go-between. decent size flash drives are so cheap these days (link in next post because AB doesn't allow two amazon links in one post).
