Does a DVD play from the centre out or from the edge in like an LP please?

Not really odd...

CDs and DVDs come in the normal 12cm size and a smaller 8cm size (and other weird shapes and sizes http://www.rovix.com/...siness_card_types.gif )

regardless of what shape or size disc you put in the drive the center is always going to be in the same place so it's a lot easier to start playing from there.

Well now that makes sense. I've learned something today, didn't know you could get all those variations.
If the inventor of the vinyl record had made the same decision the knob to set automatic record changers between eight and twelve inch discs would not have been required.
