The frequency of sty in both my eyes seems to be on the increase. Its painful and does not always heal properly. The swelling eventually dies down after a couple of weeks. Also sometimes a hard lump (like an inflamed tear duct) eventually comes out after a few months. I get about 2-3 stys a year. What could be the cause. I am also prone to hay fever and use the Opticrom eye drops regularly during the hay fever season (march-september). Any suggestions?

Hi Dom Tuk, I get styes alot too. it is often a sign that you are run down. I also have many alergies so there could possibly be a connection there. I find the best way to deal with them is to bathe your eye's with hot salted water then to use either Golden eye ointment or Broline eye ointment which can both be bought in boots without prescription.
try taking echinacea and also anti histamines i get the odd sty and they are really painfull ..i normally get them whan i feel a bit low..also you should take a good multivitamin..and lots of green leafy things in your diet..you could bathe your eyes with witch hazel you can get thet from the chemist..it will give you relief..hope you feel better soon..will miss you disagreing with me if you are unwell..

Er....no stye in eye is going to stop me arguing with oneeyedvic or oxeyedaisy (any relation??). Thanks for the info but these styes are just bothersome. bye for now
the doctors tell their patients to stop eating eggs and cheese when they have styes.  I also am very allergic and after eating eggs for a while I end up with a stye. the best treatment I have found over the years was the hot spoon trick, but put a face cloth over the spoon. Get in quick, as soon as you get the first sign. eating cheese regalarly causes hay fever for many, me too, as does wheat. the inflamed tear duct is related to hay fever and other allergic reactions. High doses of natural vit c is helpul, also homeopathic remedies from the hralth shop. You probably don't believe me.......
