Has BT lost its monopoly on UK land line rentals. What are the other cheaper rentals on offer??

The people I use for my landline phone offers cheaper than BT phone calls and cheaper than BT line rental.

Surely BT charges rental on its lines because they are ITS property. just as ntl owns its cables and sky owns its sattelite space?
